THE ROLE OF ALKALINE CLEANING SOLUTIONS AND CL-CONTAINING LUBRICANTS ON PITTING CORROSION IN NiTi ALLOYS

چکیده

Alkaline cleaning agents are found to react with remnant manufacturing lubricants trapped in surface defects of a NiTi alloy to form Cl-based salts. These sub-surface “reservoirs” may act as nucleation sites for pitting corrosion either latent under ambient conditions, or on exposure to a limited range of high temperatures used to impart pseudoelastic properties in these alloys as part of normal processing. The elevated temperature range over which corrosion was found to occur correlates well with published thermodynamic data for the liquid stability range of specific titanium chlorides. No corrosion is seen on exposure to higher temperatures. The combination of sufficient cavity size, amounts and ratios of reactive species viz., Cl and K (or Na), and water are thought to be necessary for a pit to evolve to a mature size.

Effect of Chloride Concentration on the Pitting and Repassivation Potentials of Reinforcing Steel in Alkaline Solutions

Reinforcing steel bars (-12mm diameter and 150mm long) were used in cyclic polarization tests in saturated Ca(OH)z solution and simulated concrete pore solution (SPS) with various levels of sodium chloride addition. Below a limiting chloride level (-O.004M [Cl-] in Ca(OH)z solution and -0.4M [Cl-] in SPS solution), steel was not found to undergo pitting corrosion even if it was polarized to the...

Dealloying and Stress Corrosion Craking of Copper Alloys in Cu(I) Solutions

Natural cases of dealloying or stress-corrosion cracking in copper alloys normally occur in oxygenated solutions, where the cathodic reactant is O2 or Cu2+. Within cavities or under deposits, the local environment is enriched in cuprous ions (e.g. CuCl2-, Cu (NH3)2+) and the potential is close to the Cu/Cu+ equilibrium. Such conditions can be simulated macroscopically by stirring powdered Cu2O ...

Electrochemical Studies of Pitting Corrosion of Cu-fe Alloy in Sodium Chloride Solutions

The electrochemical studies of pitting corrosion of CuFe alloy (70% Cu30%Fe) were carried out in sodium chloride solutions. The techniques of measurements were: open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The effect of different concentrations of the inorganic additives (WO4 , PO4 , NO2 , B4O7 , CrO4 ) on the pitting corrosion of the alloy in...

Activation of Aluminum as an Effective Reducing Agent by Pitting Corrosion for Wet-chemical Synthesis

Metallic aluminum (Al) is of interest as a reducing agent because of its low standard reduction potential. However, its surface is invariably covered with a dense aluminum oxide film, which prevents its effective use as a reducing agent in wet-chemical synthesis. Pitting corrosion, known as an undesired reaction destroying Al and is enhanced by anions such as F⁻, Cl⁻, and Br⁻ in aqueous solutio...

Pitting-induced hydrogen embrittlement of magnesium- aluminium alloy

In this study, the pitting corrosion susceptibility and its role on the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of AZ80 magnesium alloy were studied using slow strain rate testing (SSRT), electrochemical technique and immersion test method. The electrochemical and immersion tests in chloride-containing solution revealed severe pitting corrosion in the alloy. The SSRT results of the alloy under continuo...
